Students are introduced to the basic elements of music and the ways that they are integrated to create works in various styles.This course is a selected survey of classical, popular, and folk music traditions from around the world. In addition, the role of music as ritual, aesthetic experience, mode of communication, and artistic expression is explored.By listening to and comprehending the structural and aesthetic considerations behind significant written and improvised works, from the earliest examples of notated Western music to the music of living composers and performers, students will be prepared to undertake analytical and ultimately creative projects. The GRE General Test is required of all applicants for admission. While the University of Chicago does not have a minimum GRE score requirement, admitted student scores are generally in the 75th percentile or higher. Graduate Admission Requirements

A minimum cumulative college grade point average of 3.0 or higher.

A minimum of one year of teaching experience, or its equivalent, in music.

International students must take the Test of English as a Foreign Language The Internet-based TOEFL test measures the areas of reading, listening, writing and speaking. VanderCook requires a minimum score of 90 on the IBT with no subscores under 22. The EIKEN test can be considered in lieu of the TOEFL; VanderCook requires a minimum grade of 2A, but admission is contingent on an interview.
