Graduate Degrees in Biomedical Engineering
College description: Biomedical Engineering M.S., Research traditional master’s program culminating in a thesis.Biomedical Engineering M.S., Accelerated Program accelerated, course-based master’s program with the opportunity to choose a specialty area.Biomedical Engineering M.S., Biomedical Innovation, Design, and Entrepreneurship accelerated, course and project-based master’s program with an emphasis in design, business, and engineering.Biomedical engineering is the application of engineering tools for solving problems in biology and medicine. This area of study combines fundamentals of the biomedical sciences with advanced engineering methods of analysis and design, and brings together these two fields in order to contribute to the design of new medical instruments and devices, apply engineering principles for understanding and repairing the human body and other biological systems, and use engineering tools for decision making and cost containment. They specialize in biomedical engineering areas as diverse as biomechanics, bioinstrumentation, biomedical imaging and biophotonics, micro and nanotechnology, systems biology, biomaterials, cellular engineering, tissue engineering, neuroengineering, and rehabilitation and human performance.Resources to help applicant afford graduate study might include assistantships, fellowships, traineeships, and financial aid.Grades of Incomplete are considered to be unsatisfactory if they are not removed during the next enrolled semester. There are no degree-specific assessments and examinations outside of those given in individual courses.Named options appear on the transcript with degree conferral. The university recommends IDPs for all postdoctoral researchers and graduate students, and requires IDPs for all postdoctoral researchers and graduate students supported by National Institutes of Health funding.
Students who complete their BS degree in BME at UW-Madison, with an overall GPA of at least 3.0 or a GPA of 3.25 for the final 60 credits, are eligible to for the MS degree and can complete it in only 24-credits, which is intended primarily for students not planning to pursue a PhD.
Each application is judged on the basis of previous academic record, Graduate Record Examinations scores for the general test three letters of recommendation, and statement of purpose.

Please The Graduate Division requires three letters of recommendation for an application to be complete. In the first and last name spaces, applicant can type "3rd Letter." This will "trick" the system into thinking that the recommendation section of their application is complete, and it will allow applicant to submit their application if applicant have met all other requirements.
Applicants are required to submit two essays as part of the online application to the MFE program. The application essays help the Admissions Committee become acquainted with applicants as individuals, and they demonstrate an applicant's ability to write concisely and economically.
The essay topics can be found within the MFE Supplemental section of the Graduate Division online application.

College description: Biomedical engineering education at Carnegie Mellon University reflects the belief that a top biomedical engineer must be deeply trained in both a traditional engineering practice and biomedical sciences. This collaborative approach, combined with a rigorous engineering education, confers unique depth and breadth to the education of Biomedical Engineering graduates. The Biomedical Engineering additional major program takes advantage of curricular overlaps between Biomedical Engineering and traditional engineering majors, such that the dual major can be completed in four years with only a modest increase in course requirements. The requirements for Biomedical Engineering consist of the core, the tracks, and the capstone design course. The core exposes students to basic facets of biomedical engineering to lay a foundation. The tracks allow students to build depth in a specific aspect of biomedical engineering. No course taken on a pass fail or audit basis may be counted toward the additional major. The BMTE track is ideal for students interested in combining the education of Biomedical Engineering with Materials Science Engineering or with Chemical Engineering. Students of this track may develop careers in biotechnology, tissue engineering, biopharmaceuticals, and medical devices that leverage materials properties. Some Special Topics and newly offered or intermittently offered courses may be acceptable as BMTE track electives. The BMEC track is ideally suited to the combined education of Biomedical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering or Civil Environmental Engineering.
In the online application applicant will be given the option of choosing a first choice program and a second choice program. Applicants should only submit one application that indicates a first preference and an optional second preference.
During application reviews the admissions committee will consider their qualifications for the other INI program applicant've indicated.
Application to the university programs has consistently increased year after year. Admission is based on many factors including their academic record, GRE test scores, letters of recommendation, programming skills, and written and spoken English abilities. The university also consider any work/internship experience, research experience, publications, their essay responses, and all other information applicant submit in their online application.
The INI does not use a "formula" to rank applicants for acceptance, and thus there is no magic number in terms of GRE scores, GPA, etc. Any further evaluation must be undertaken by the admissions committee once a full application is available for review.
Please note that with the College of Engineering's online application, applicant must submit a separate application to apply to different College of Engineering programs.
If applicant are applying online, applicant must pay their application fee online with a credit card.
All applicants are required to submit their recommendations via the online application.
GRE scores may be retrieved from the Carnegie Mellon central database.
All non-native English speakers are required to provide a test of their ESL skills by taking the iBTTOEFL , or the IELTS
If the applicant has never taken the TOEFL, the INI may consider waiving the test if sufficient ESL skill is proven.
Only the GRE General Test is accepted. Neither the GMAT nor GRE Subject Tests are accepted for admission evaluation.
The INI has no published minimum score requirements.
As with the GRE, the INI has no published minimum score requirements for the TOEFL or IELTS. However, as a rough guideline, the INI looks for section scores of 25 and higher for the TOEFL and a total band score of 7.0 or higher for the IELTS.
The INI will not accept hard copies of transcripts as part of the application.
The amount of the assistance, if any, is determined by the admissions committee at the time of application review.
