College description: The university will discuss the place of archaeology in the broader field of anthropology and debate issues facing the discipline today. The course will rely on case studies from around the world and from many different time periods to introduce students to the research process, field and lab methods, and essential questions of archaeological anthropology.The course includes sections on the ethnographic research method and on the library of ethnographic material relating to cultural change in different parts of the world that anthropology has produced since the 19th century.Applicant will also have the opportunity, during recitations, to conduct hands-on exercises collecting and analyzing behavioral, morphological, and genetic data on both humans and nonhuman primates and working with the Anthropology extensive collection of fossil casts.ANTH 100 Topics In Anthropology and the Modern World.This course will involve the analysis of hominid fossil casts and human skeletal material from the Penn Museum Physical Anthropology section.As a result, they provide a useful framework to investigate a classic problem in anthropology, the intersection between biology and culture. This class investigates the senses as cultural and historical phenomena, drawing on readings from a range of disciplines, including anthropology, history, psychology, musicology, and cultural studies.This course examines the distribution of water resources throughout the Middle East and the archaeology and anthropology of water exploitation and management over the last 9000 years, looking at continuities and changes through time.

GRE scores are optional for all applicants. If a student chooses to submit GRE scores, they will be considered as part of the application package. There is no minimum GRE or TOEFL score requirement. Please arrange to take their exam by a date that will guarantee that their scores will be forwarded to the University of Pennsylvania by the December 15th deadline.
TOEFL Exam scores are required for all international applicants. There is no minimum TOEFL score requirment. The TOEFL is not required if applicant are currently enrolled in or have already graduated from another graduate program in the United States.

College description: The MA degree program includes 30 credit hours of Anthropology coursework, completion of first-year student requirements and a master’s project paper.Graduate students must abide by the rules as they existed in the year of their admission. See the Department’s Graduate Coordinator in 380 Academic Center to obtain a copy of previous handbooks.Students may be admitted into an MA-only track or directly to the PhD program, depending upon interests and qualifications. If applicant intend to get a PhD in Anthropology the university encourage applicant to apply directly to the PhD program.The Anthropology M.A., Medical Anthropology concentration consists of 30 credit hours, most of these taken in formal courses, a research project and a research paper or thesis based on that project.Students take courses in a required core , a Medical Anthropology core , and electives offered within the Anthropology. Only six credits from non-anthropology courses may be counted toward the MA degree.The Medical Anthropology track does not require a qualifying exam, but each student will undertake an approved research project developed in consultation with the adviser. The research paper or thesis must be approved by the adviser and one other member of the Anthropology.Students in the Medical Anthropology concentration may PhD program in Anthropology and will be subject to the same admissions criteria and procedures as other PhD program applicants.Up to 6 credits may be taken from outside of APY with prior approval.
The minimum GPA for admission to the PhD program in Anthropology is 3.2.
The minimum GPA for admission to the MA program in Anthropology is 3.0.

Statement of Purpose Generally, successful applicants have a strong background in either a geographic, cultural region and/or a particular topical or theoretical interest in anthropology.
The department has no set GRE score minimum, but expects students to present strong scores for admission to both the MA and PhD programs in Anthropology.
