College description: Learning Outcome #1 A graduate student should be able to develop a research plan.Learning Outcome #1b: A graduate student should be able to present and defend a research plan.Learning Outcome #2: A graduate student should be able to independently answer questions regarding their research field.Official transcripts of all college workOfficial scores on the General Test of the Graduate Record ExaminationStudents from foreign countries where English is not the primary language or that did not earn their baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited US institution, must present the results of the TOEFL examination or IELTS , as a part of their application for admission. A baccalaureate degree in a field of biology from an accredited college or university in this country or its equivalent in a foreign institution is required for admission, as well as an average of B or better in the major. Grades, GRE scores, and recommendations are used in concert to determine acceptability.Application tips for graduate programs in biology and marine biology.Students may be admitted to the programs at the beginning of any academic semester.Graduate teaching assistants are responsible for teaching 2 to 3 laboratory sections each semester in introductory , intermediate and some advanced courses. The Biology and Marine Biology of the University of North Carolina Wilmington began offering the master of science in marine biology program in 1980 and the master of science in biology in 1989.Over the past seven years, the modal time to graduation was 2.5 years and the placement rate for graduates in Ph.D. programs and jobs in the field has been 92.4%.The graduate programs also integrate well with strong programs in biology and marine biology.
There is a $75 non-refundable application fee.
The Biology subject GRE is not required.
Their application may be resubmitted for the following semester.
GRE scores are active for 5 years from the date of the test.
If applicant are graduating from a university in the United States, applicant do not need to submit TOEFL scores.
A year off should not affect their application, particularly if applicant have gained some experience in the field during that year Their eligibility is based on their GRE scores, GPA, letters of recommendation, and research and work experience.
Students must request these assistantships , and selection will be based on an evaluation of academic records, recommendations, experience, and relevant criteria. The deadline for applying, if applicant wish to have a teaching assistantship, is February 15.
While it is not mandatory that one have a degree in biology, examination of the admission criteria clearly indicates that an extensive background in the biological sciences is required.
What is the Marine Biology Master’s degree Program?
Marine biology is the study of marine creatures, their origins, structure, functions, behavior, and interactions with the environment. Because marine biology is such a large field, most graduate students who are interested focus on one aspect of it, such as astronomy, biological oceanography, cellular biology, chemistry, ecology, geology, meteorology, molecular biology, physical oceanography, zoology, or fisheries biology. Specializations might be based on a species, a group of species, a habit, a technique, or an ecosystem. Marine Biologist study the origin, structure, functions and behavior of marine organisms.
Marine Ecologist study the interrelationships between marine organisms and their environment.
What is a Biological Oceanography Master’s degree Program?
Biological oceanography, to put it simply, is a science that studies the animals and plants that live in ocean waters. The purpose of biological oceanography is to figure out what regulates the abundances, distribution, types, and temporal variation of creatures in the sea, as well as how organisms influence and are impacted by the oceanographic system's physics, chemistry, and geology.
What are the differences between a Marine Biology and Biological Oceanography masters degree?
Biological oceanography is comparable to marine biology, but differs in that it studies the ocean from a different perspective. From whales to microscopic algae and bacteria, marine biologists examine the plants, animals, and protists of our estuaries, beaches, and oceans. Biological oceanographers, on the other hand, study marine animals and their biological processes in their native habitat.
What do Marine Biologists learn from a Marine Biology and Biological Oceanography masters degree?
To better comprehend marine species, marine biologists study biological oceanography as well as the related sciences of chemical, physical, and geological oceanography. They investigate the origins, structure, functions, and behavior of all types of life in the sea, related estuaries, rivers, and lakes, as well as their interactions with one another and the environment. Marine biologists may be expected to operate in a laboratory, conduct research, and work at sea or on shore-based field stations for extended periods of time.
How long will it take to become a Marine Biologist?
A bachelor's degree in marine biology is necessary to become a Marine Biologist, which takes around four years. Master's degree candidates should expect to spend an additional two to three years in school, while a PhD candidate can expect to spend up to six years in school.
Careers in Marine Biology- What can you do with your masters degree?
Researchers, professors, and teachers with a master's degree in marine biology can work as environmental consultants, natural resource managers, fisheries biologists, environmental lobbyists, naturalists, marine illustrators, aquarium employees, biotechnology specialists, and aquaculturists, among other jobs.
Students who get a master's degree in marine biology can work for universities, colleges, international organizations, federal and state agencies, commercial companies/consulting firms, marine related industries, nonprofit laboratories, local governments, and even as self-employed individuals.
Marine Biology and Biological Oceanography is projected to grow 10 percent from 2016 to 2026, faster than average for all occupations. Median pay for Marine Biology and Biological Oceanography in 2018 was $119,850. The number of jobs were 54780.
