Master of Science
College description: The M.S. in Engineering Physics program at Appalachian State University offers hands-on, laboratory-based courses that prepare students for entry into industry or a Ph.D. program.Graduates are also well prepared for a Ph.D. program. Students of the M.S. in Engineering Physics degree typically enter the program with little or no engineering experience and leave with a broad foundation in fundamental physics, hands-on practical and theoretical training in electrical engineering, and experience in software engineering for automation and robotics. The university graduates are very competitive in the job market and have been very successful in both industry and Ph.D. programs. Two of the concentrations are Professional Science Master concentration. PSMs are a nationally affiliated degree that includes advanced training in engineering physics, along with technical writing and MBA coursework. In addition, many of the university PSM students choose to pursue a dual degree with the MBA program. Overall, 20% of the university students spend an extra year to receive both an M.S. and an MBA. If business is not interesting to applicant, the university systems and laboratory automation concentration allows applicant the flexibility to take engineering physics courses only or to pursue some coursework in other departments such as technology, mathematics, or computer science.Primarily, the graduate curriculum and graduate student projects are focused on the Physics of Engineering specifically of the study and development of instrumentation and automation for applications such as remote sensing, signal processing, astronomical control systems, manufacturing and testing controls, and robotics.
In addition, students develop troubleshooting and problem solving techniques and tools for dealing with sophisticated technical problems and the versatility required for long-term success in a rapidly evolving technical environment.
Required Entrance Exam: GRE

All applications for a given entry term will be weighed based upon the number of seats available and the quality of the complete application packages.
The college is dedicated to providing instruction and research essential to the university's mission and seeks to cultivate the habits of inquiry, learning and service among all its constituents.
PhD Program Climate and Space Sciences and Engineering
College description: The the students-M Engineering Physics program equips graduates with the skills to develop advanced technologies by providing a thorough curriculum of engineering courses combined with a physics and mathematics education equivalent to a traditional physics degree. With 36 credit hours of math, engineering and physics, plus 12 credits of general electives, Engineering Physics students have a high degree of flexibility and opportunity for exploring or specializing in fields of interest. An advanced physics and mathematics background coupled with an engineering curriculum is excellent preparation for most graduate programs in engineering, physics or applied physics. The Engineering Physics program is administered by the Nuclear Engineering and Radiological Sciences, but student focus areas need not be related to the department.Engineering physicists combine advanced physics concepts and engineering expertise to bring ideas to the marketplace. An iconic example of engineering physics at work is the leap forward that transistors brought to computing. The inventors of these and other applications from harnessing nuclear fission for generating electricity to the multifaceted uses of lasers had to be well-versed in both the fundamental physics and the practicalities of engineering design.Engineering Physics is administered by the NERS Department.
Departmental Core Courses: Required of all Climate & Space PhD students.
The deadline for the Fall doctoral student cohort is December 15. It is recommended that applicant submit their application early to ensure that it arrives on or before the deadline.
All applicants are required to submit transcripts to Rackham.
The College of Engineering requires all applicants to its graduate programs to take the GRE test. The College does not impose a minimum GRE score requirement for graduate admission.
Climate & Space does not require a GRE subject test, only the general test.
All international students need to provide TOEFL, MELAB, or IELTS scores. Required TOEFL score is: 230 or better OR 84 or better
Photocopies of their GRE and TOEFL scores cannot be considered.
There are application materials required to complete this process.

Graduate Programs in the Biomedical Sciences
Within those overall expectations, a specific course of study for each graduate program is required and described in each degreeplan of study.
In general a year of biology, organic chemistry and mathematics through calculus are required, and biochemistry and molecular biology are strongly recommended.
Letters of recommendation from research mentors that describe creativity, hardwork and promise in science are very important.
The GRE general test is required. Recent classes have earned an average of 70th percentile in each area. A GRE subject test is desirable, but is not required. The Test of English as a Foreign Language is required for foreign students unless they are from an English-speaking country or have a degree from a University program where the instruction is primarily in English.
The main purpose of these rotations is to aid students in selecting a laboratory for their thesis work.
PhD applicants: Typically, a graduate GPA of at least 3.6
The general portion of the GRE is required for all applicants. UCI does not require a minimum score on the GRE.
International applicants must take either the TOEFL or the International English Language Testing System exams.
For the TOEFL exam, international applicants must obtain a minimum score of 80 on the Internet-based Test or 550 on the paper-based test
This is required of all applicants.

Admission and GRE requirements
One interesting thing about bioinformatics is that the fundamental work that opens up new fields is usually "engineering", while the application of the tools is "science".
The PBSE program was created because the grad admissions process at UCSC only allows students to apply to one program—the PBSE program provides a single-application admission to MCD biology, biochemistry, microbiology, and bioinformatics.
The University of California-Santa Cruz does not require a Subject GRE, since there is none that covers the wide range of material that the university want the university incoming students to know. The University of California-Santa Cruz does require the general GRE exam, and the TOEFL exam. If applicant have taken a Subject GRE exam in a relevant field, please do include that information, as the better picture of applicant University of California-Santa Cruz has, the better admissions decisions the university can make.
To the extent that the university care about GRE scores, all three are important, as students are more likely to fail from difficulty in writing a thesis than from difficulty in doing the computational parts of the research.
The university expect students to have completed at least 6 core courses with a GPA of 3.0.
By that point they've generally got the background, probem statement, and some of the methods, but no results.
For the most part, getting fellowships requires filling out application forms and writing essays, much like applying to colleges. For example, there is a homework assignment in BME 205 requiring students to find a fellowship they are eligible for and write the application essays, and students get detailed feedback on their essays.
A clear statement of the research question being addressed. This is not just a general statement of the field the research will be in, but a particular hypothesis that will be investigated.
The thesis proposal should start with a clear statement of the new ideas that are being developed.
Having a clear statement about where the thesis research ends is important, and one of the main goals of a successful ATC exam is for the student, the adviser, and the rest of the committee to have agreed on the exact scope of the thesis.
It is extremely common for students to be required to rework their research plans to include some discussion of alternatives should the rosy best-case plans they initially laid out not be realized.
