College description: Students may affiliate with any of the three BCMB programs, but they initially are admitted to, and remain members of, the BCMB Allied program.Program members pursue vigorous research programs in the areas of membrane-protein structure and function, membrane trafficking and synaptic transmission, protein folding, intracellular and cell-surface signaling pathways, protein modification, membrane biochemistry and biophysics, DNA replication and repair, and RNA silencing and processing.Nucleic acid structure, function and metabolism are investigated using in vitro biochemistry and structural biology, complemented by cell biology and genetics.PhD students are admitted to the Biochemistry and Structural Biology program through the BCMB Allied program. Applicants are not required to take the take the Graduate Record Examination The program encourages but does not require applicants to take the GRE Advanced Test in biology, chemistry, biochemistry, or cell and molecular biology. In their first year, BCMB Allied students take the program core curriculum courses in molecular genetics, biochemistry and structural biology, cell biology, gene structure function, and logic and critical analysis. The choice of a mentor determines the student program assignment: Biochemistry Structural Biology, Cell and Developmental Biology, or Molecular Biology. The culmination of the student successful progression through the program is the final examination and certification by the Special Committee that the thesis represents an official piece of research satisfying the requirements of the WCGS for the PhD degree.
Applicants are not required to take the take the Graduate Record Examination The program encourages - but does not require - applicants to take the GRE Advanced Test in biology, chemistry, biochemistry, or cell and molecular biology. Applicants whose native language is not English are required to take the TOEFL examination.

Molecular and Cell Biology
College description: Both the Master’s and Ph.D. degrees are offered with a concentration in Structural Biology, Biochemistry, and Biophysics Master’s degrees may be earned under either of two plans. Plan A emphasizes research and Plan B requires a comprehensive understanding of a general character based on course work.Throughout the reminder of their graduate work, students will participate in the Departmental Graduate Seminar to present their research results annually. All SB3 graduate students are expected to participate in the Graduate Biochemistry Seminar a weekly, student-led discussion of current topics and techniques.Students with insufficient background in biochemistry are encouraged to take MCB 5001 or the corresponding course without a laboratory during their first semester.Courses required for the major: MCB 5012: Foundations of Structural Biochemistry MCB 5013: Structure and Function of Biological Macromolecules.Immediately following the seminar, a formal examination will be given that includes questions on the proposal and tests the candidate’s general knowledge of biochemistry, structural biology and biophysics.Students with insufficient background in biochemistry should take MCB 5001 during their first semester.Students must complete 21 content course credits on a Plan A Master’s plan of study and a minimum of 9 credits of GRAD 5950. The student must complete and defend a Master’s-level thesis.MCB 5002: Advanced Biochemistry Laboratory MCB 5003: Biophysical Chemistry MCB 5008: Techniques of Biophysical Chemistry MCB 5010: Biological Spectroscopy MCB 5014: Structure and Dynamics of Macromolecular Machines MCB 5025: Structure and Function of Biological Membranes MCB 5076: Biomolecular NMR Spectroscopy MCB 5240: Virology MCB 5896: Practicum in NMR MCB 5896-066: Molecular Graphics Module MCB 5896-047: Cryo-Electron Microscopy.

Molecular and Cell Biology Graduate Program
College description: The Biochemistry and Cell Biology offers a graduate program for the Master of Science degree.Students will be exposed to biochemistry and molecular biology related research activities, including theory and practice culminating with the MS degree. A total of at least 30 graduate credits with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or greater are required for the MS degree. Of this, 24 credits must be earned in core courses in biochemistry, cellular biology, and molecular genetics as well as courses aimed at exposing students to laboratory research, literature-based research, and advanced methods in biochemistry and cell biology. The remaining 6 credits may be selected from elective courses, special seminar courses, and courses in experimental design, data analysis and laboratory techniques.Part-time options are available, although it is expected that all students will complete the degree within a three-year period. For the MS degree, at least 3 additional credits of research performed in a laboratory or on critical evaluation of current literature are also required and these studies will form the basis of a written and orally defended MS.Research experience in the life sciences is not required but will be considered as a positive indicator that may mitigate a deficiency in the academic record.
