A doctoral student is required to complete the program, including defense and acceptance of the doctoral dissertation, within eight years after successful completion of the qualifying examination.

Although the exact number of courses required in each subfield may vary among students, typically four per subfield are required.

For most students, the total time required to reach completion of the higher degree will be shortened by about a year.

Here applicant may complete the application, taking as much time as applicant need, of course while keeping the January 4th deadline in mind. The TOEFL/IELTS is the only admissions requirement that applies specifically to international applicants. The University of Chicago does not require a minimum GRE score for admission nor do University of Chicago provides statistics on the GRE scores for admitted students. Students applying for admission to the graduate program are evaluated on the basis of previous academic performance, letters of recommendation, a personal statement, and two writing samples. GRE scores are required for American applicants.
