College description: African American Studies the Program The African American Studies graduate program focuses on life, culture, and social organization of persons of African descent. Students are expected to a multidisciplinary approach to the study of the international and national divisions of race as they pertain to persons of African descent, wherever they may find themselves. Programs may consider students for an additional academic master’s or professional master’s degree only if the additional degree is in a distinctly different field. Applicants admitted to a doctoral program that requires a master’s degree to be earned at Berkeley as a prerequisite will be permitted to undertake the second master’s degree, despite the overlap in field. If applicant are admitted, an official transcript with evidence of degree conferral will not be required. Letters of recommendation: Applicants may request online letters of recommendation through the online application system. Hard copies of recommendation letters must be sent directly to the program, not the Graduate Division. Demonstrated knowledge in the field should include understanding relations among social, economic, and political structures and culture in African American life. Doctoral Degree Requirements Program Requirements A minimum of two years or four semesters of academic residence is required by the university for all PhD programs.

College description: For the 2020-2021 graduate admissions cycle, the University of Chicago English Department is accepting only applicants interested in working in and with Black Studies. The university understand Black Studies to be a capacious intellectual project that spans a variety of methodological approaches, fields, geographical areas, languages, and time periods.

The deadline to apply is January 4th. To apply, applicant must complete an on-line application and provide a candidate statement, writing sample, 3 recommendations and transcripts from all previously attended colleges/universities in addition to the application fee. Here applicant may complete the application, taking as much time as applicant need, of course while keeping the January 4th deadline in mind. The TOEFL/IELTS is the only admissions requirement that applies specifically to international applicants. Students applying for admission to the graduate program are evaluated on the basis of previous academic performance, letters of recommendation, a personal statement, and two writing samples. GRE scores are required for American applicants.
